A vehicle magnet can be a convenient way to display your business name, but the vehicle's badge or model name does not tell you whether it will work. The exact panel matters. Before ordering, check the material, the usable space, and the condition of the surface where the sign will sit.
Start with the exact panel
Vehicle magnets need a suitable magnetic surface, usually steel. They will not attach to aluminum, plastic, or fiberglass, and nonmetallic body filler can prevent reliable contact. Different panels on the same vehicle can be made from different materials, so testing a rear door does not confirm that a front door will work.
Use a small, clean magnet to check several spots across the intended area. Place it gently rather than dragging it over the paint. If it does not attract consistently, stop and investigate the panel before buying a sign for that location.
This is an initial compatibility check. A small magnet sticking in one spot does not establish that a larger sign will fit flat or stay properly attached across its full area.
Measure the smooth usable area
Look for a smooth, flat or gently curved section large enough for the whole magnet. Avoid placing it across a panel gap, trim strip, badge, deep crease, or recessed section. The complete back of the sign needs contact with the panel, including its edges and corners.
Measure inside those obstacles. A paper rectangle cut to your proposed dimensions can help you judge the available space and the visual size. Check each side separately if you plan to use two magnets.
Onyx Print Group's vehicle magnets use flexible 30mil material with a glossy finish. That means a thickness of 0.030 inch. Square and rounded corners are available. Order quantity also matters: one means one individual magnet, so a sign for each side requires two.
Prepare the surface before fitting
Clean both the vehicle panel and the magnetic side with mild detergent, then let them dry completely. Dirt trapped underneath can damage the finish. Paint, clear coat, and wax must be fully cured before application. Avoid repainted panels or body-filler repairs unless the specific care instructions and surface guidance confirm suitability.
Position the sign so it lies flat without lifted corners or trapped air. If you need to reposition it, lift it away and apply it again rather than sliding it across the paint. Do not drive with a sign that will not sit fully against the panel.
Make cleaning part of the routine
Remove and clean vehicle magnets daily, including the panel underneath, then dry both before reapplying. Store removed signs flat in a clean, dry location without folding or creasing them. Follow any additional care instructions supplied with your order.
Long-term coverage can also leave uneven fading between the exposed paint and the covered area. Removability does not make a magnet maintenance-free or guarantee that paint will look unchanged.
The best time to discover an unsuitable panel is before the artwork is printed. Test the exact location, measure a clear space, and make sure you can maintain full contact and regular cleaning throughout use.
Once you have confirmed the panel is suitable, choose your custom vehicle magnet size and upload your artwork.
