Grommets, Welded Edges, and Pole Pockets Explained

A banner can look right in the preview and still be awkward to display if its finishing does not match the mounting setup. Before ordering, decide what the banner will attach to and how it will be supported. Grommets, welded edges, and pole pockets each solve a different part of that job.

Grommets provide attachment points

Grommets are the metal rings fitted through holes near a banner's edges. Rope, suitable ties, hooks, or bungees can pass through them to connect the banner to a support. The ring reinforces the hole where the attachment pulls on the material.

They are useful along a fence or around a suitable frame. Measure the space and identify secure attachment points. In the Onyx ordering tool, select the banner sides and grommet spacing: every 2-3 feet, every 1-2 feet, every 6-12 inches, corners only, or custom inches. Choose the arrangement that fits your supports.

Avoid planning a large display around just one or two convenient hooks. The banner's weight and the forces on it need to be shared appropriately across the installation. For outdoor or overhead displays, have the mounting method checked by someone qualified to assess the site.

Welded edges reinforce the perimeter

A welded edge is a reinforced hem. The edge of the vinyl is folded over and bonded using heat, creating a finished band around the banner. This adds reinforcement where the banner is handled and attached.

Welding and grommets often work together: the hem reinforces the edge, while the metal rings provide places to connect the hanging hardware. Choosing one does not necessarily mean choosing against the other.

Reinforced edges still need a suitable mounting setup. A hem does not make a banner immune to damage, and pulling the material excessively tight can put unnecessary strain on it. Plan for the display location and follow the instructions for the mounting hardware.

Pole pockets create sleeves for support

A pole pocket is a sleeve along an edge of the banner. A compatible rod or pole passes through the sleeve to support that edge. Depending on the display system, pockets may be needed at the top, bottom, or other specified edges.

Measure your pole's diameter before ordering. Onyx lists 1-inch, 2-inch, 3-inch, and 4-inch choices under Pocket size. These measurements refer to your pole's diameter. Onyx calculates how large to make the finished pocket from the diameter you select. Also measure the finished banner dimensions your display system accepts.

Keep essential words and logos clear of the pocket areas, where the material folds into a sleeve. Review the preview with the selected pocket edges in mind so the main message stays visible.

Match the options to your display

Onyx includes grommets and welded edges at no extra charge when selected. To choose pole pockets, turn off grommets and welding in the ordering tool. Rope requires grommets to be off. Wind slits are another available selection. Review the chosen finishes before completing your order.

For a fence display, begin with attachment points and grommets. For an existing pole or rod system, begin with its specifications. In either case, check the finished banner size, edge treatment, and hardware requirements together. A few measurements before ordering are much easier than trying to adapt the wrong finish after the banner arrives.

Choose your vinyl banner size and finishing options on the ordering page. Grommets and welded edges are included.
